What is the best way to create a floor in my basement?

My basement is full height which I don't want to lose too much of. There is only a compacted dirt floor at present. As I live on a slope the basement is mostly on ground level - great for access but the foundations are too shallow to excavate very far down. Insulation is also an issue. I can't afford to underpin the foundations. Any suggestions?
